One of the surprises of our new home was discovering that Black-headed Grosbeaks summer here as well as in the great northwest. We didn't think we'd see them again, and here they are eating from the same birdfeeder their relatives ate from a thousand miles north of here. We heard a Belted Kingfisher down by the pond Tuesday night. Another surprise. We're looking forward to photo opportunities.Life unfolds.

We had Black-headed Grosbeaks in Western Marin Co so it is not too unusual for your location

How beautiful! I can't wait to get my bird feeders up and going, esp. for the hummers but I didn't want to start until I'm there to monitor them. So, I'll just hang out by your feeders!

Actually, I should have been more precise. The Black-Headed Grosbeak is the brightly colored bird on the right. The little one on the left is a female house finch.
We do have squirrels here, but not as many as we had in the yard at the rental. We expect more to show up, the more we feed the birds.
Our spring season is running about a month behind yours. I need to get my nest boxes and bird feeders up. :)

Nice visitors! Very exciting to read of your new house, soon to feel like a home. I think cooking a few good meals at home, preferably with garlic sauteed in olive oil somehow, will do much to make the house your home. And a couple exhausting days that finish with a collapse into bed with a good book. Will look forward to meeting more neighbors!
