in grass valley we walked in the woods. there were a few places where we could see some expanse of sky but mostly we were in the trees.

this is about 5 minutes away from our house in arcata. open fields on both side of the road.

now we are almost around the open fields.

we live 2 block down this street.

our neighborhood. 2 blocks from home.

half a block from home. turn right at the corner. and there's chloe come say hello and get her pets. she lives in the house at left. she waits on the corner for visitors. everyone in the neighbor knows her.

here is a map of our walk. total 1.69 miles. this is our regular after dinner walk.

  1. Remember this walk? We did it all the time in Grass Valley.

Our daily walk looks so different now, and I love it!

  2. The fields and sky look just as I remember them. The air is clear and the ocean so close. Chloe looks gentle and kind -- a neighborhood greeter. I see cats out walking all the time but haven't seen a dog out walking alone for years here in Bellingham.

  7. The map cannot give you a view of the beauty of the land nor of the sense of community of the real place. Bless Chloe's sweet soul.
Bill, England and Scotland are beautiful, no matter how rainy it is. But if you'd like to share some of that rain with western U.S., I'm sure they'd appreciate it!
(commenting from work, so I'm guessing this will post)

  8. Love the area but it looks as if you could use some road repairs before winter sets in.

  10. nc... we see bad patches marked for repair in other areas. no marks on the street in our area pictured. we might also be the last neighborhood to get daily mail and fedex deliveries. when better late than never is so true.

  11. Like Judy I appreciate the levelness. I can do flat--hills kill me. I adore your greeter. Does she ever take the trip with you?

  12. Arkansas Patti-- We could walk the hills. There are mountains to the east of us, the Coast Range. Pretty heavy-duty climbing. We definitely prefer the flats. We adore Chloe, but she is absolutely trained to stay on her corner. We pet her and love her every chance we get!

  14. Sounds like there are fires pretty close to your former home in Grass Valley, so you're probably better off where you are...

  15. Tara-- We love taking this walk, and we always like getting a chance to pet Chloe. Such a sweet doggie.

Isabelita- I've thought about those fires and that smoke. Really glad we're not there.
