  1. Shoveler and Teal (but not Green-Winged) were two of the last birds seen in 2014 for me. Happy New Year.

  5. John-- How wonderful that you saw a teal and shoveler at the end of the year. Such beautiful birds. Happy New Year!

Bill-- Red kites and buzzards are interesting too! I'd love to see a red kite.

Mark-- We're always glad to see the waterfowl at the marsh. It surprises us how many species come by here in winter.

Arkansas Patti-- It's always nice to see such colors this time of the year.

    MandT-- Yes, exquisite!

    1. Tara-- We've been seeing fat robins too. Maybe they're getting ready for nesting season, fattening up and staking out territory.

  7. There was a big group of some kind of shovelers sheltering in the leeward area of our nearby lake the other day. I've never seen so many of them gathering at one time. Migratory behavior?

    1. isabelita-- I don't know much about Shovelers. I always check the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website for answers. They are THE BEST!

  8. Beautiful birds and great photos of them. I really need to learn more about birds. I guess I could say the same about most things. I wish I had different priorities when I was in my "formative" years.

  9. Pat-- I started learning about birds and atmospheric optics after I retired. It opened up a whole new world for me, literally!
