Three Weeks On The Road

Three weeks is a long, long time to be on the road. We are definitely road-weary and glad to be back in our little adopted town of Arcata. We arrived home on Saturday. Many miles, many faces, many meals cooked in a small one-electric burner kitchen or on a two-burner camp stove, many nights spent on a 4" inch foam sleeping pad-- a huge flip to the usual quiet routine we call life.

So here we are and without much to show for all those days and nights away from home. Except for this: A lovely visit with my mom who is recovering well.
A few spouting gray whales, probably a momma and her calf heading north.
A sundog out over the Monterey Bay.
A few amazingly hard to photograph crepuscular rays on two otherwise dark and cloudy mornings.

We saw old friends. We laughed and reminisced. No photographs, just good memories.

I am working on a post about one of the people we have come to know at the assisted living facility where my mom lives. I hope to hear from his daughter, so I can somewhat fill in a bit of the spaces in his 94 years of life.

We thank you for stopping by and keeping us company on our long journey.

  1. There is such a kind and loving light that comes from your mother. And then there is all that light in the sky. Glad you are home safely. Looking forward to the post about the your 94-year-old friend.

  3. Your mother looks very much like she did years ago when you were a child. Nice she's doing well and that you are back home and can relax for a bit.

  4. Your mom looks so good in that photo! It certainly lifts the heart to see her looking so healthy.
As for no photos, they are only slightly less impermanent than memories. It's a blessing to see them--I doubt I'll ever see the west coast in this incarnation--but your gift for words can paint as vivid a picture as the photos that weren't taken.
And like am, I look forward to what you have to say about the 94 year old man.

  7. Your Mom sure looks good and it is great that she is doing so well.
Travel has pluses for sure but nothing beats your own bed at the end of the day.
You did see a lot and I love that capture of the hole in the clouds with the sun streaming through.

  8. I’m glad you got to spend time with your mom. I’ll admit to some envy for your road trip, though not so much for the 4” sleeping pad and camp stove. ;-) And I’ll second the comment about the light in your mom’s eyes. And such wisdom and empathy in her face!

  9. am-- I love thinking about the light in my mom's eyes and the light in the sky, a truly beautiful observation. Thank you.

Aubrey-- Glad you liked those pics of my mom and me on Facebook. We do treasure our time together.

Rain-- I'm so glad you mentioned that my mom looks like her younger self. It's so true. She really has aged well and is a wonderful role model. We are SO HAPPY to be home. Traveling definitely gets harder as we get older.

CCorax-- I know you know how glad we were to find my mom looking and feeling well. She's going to be 90 in September, and knowing that makes this photo a true mind-blowing delight! Glad you like the words and pics. Thank you.

Scott-- We are so happy to be sleeping on our own bed. That 4" foam mattress was on the floor, and it's not as easy to get up as it was when we were younger.

Harold-- Thank you for stopping by and enjoying the scenery!

Arkansas Patti-- My mom is definitely the role model for aging well. She really loves life in the most wonderful way. I wish I had her enthusiasm. Glad you liked that photo. It was quite a sight to behold.

John-- A road trip like this one makes me want a nice comfy camper with a small useable kitchen and a fantastically comfortable bed. Thank you for the kind words about my mom. She really is quite the role model.

  11. Mark-- Thank you. She just spent an hour and a half at the doctor's office. There's always something going on at this age. Sigh. Glad you liked the ocean pics. It was not particularly cooperative, but it did have some beautiful moments.
