Girl Squirrel

Here is something I never thought I'd google: Squirrel Nipples. But, that's just what I did after seeing this orange-bellied squirrel hanging out at the bird feeder. While I was photographing it, DPR was looking at it through the binoculars. He said, "Hey, that's a female squirrel." The viewfinder doesn't give me quite the same detail that he has, so I said, "Why do you think so?" When we looked at the photographs, we were pretty convinced, but googled for images to make visual comparisons.
This is most likely a Douglas Squirrel (Tamiasciurus douglasii) but even if it turns out be a different species, it is definitely a female. This little critter must have a little family hidden somewhere in our yard. No wonder she stayed at the feeder a long time. She's hungry and tired, and it's really quiet there! If you are interested in more information about the Douglas Squirrel.
