Seeds of a Naked Conversation

When we woke Wednesday morning it was a chilly 35 degrees. By 3:00 pm it was nearly 70. There hasn't been a cloud in the sky for days and days. Picture perfect weather, except of course, it's so dry that we're still watering the vegetable and flower beds.

It seems incredible to me that we have enough flowers growing to cut little bouquets for the table every week. Our dahlias, rudbeckia, coreopsis, hollyhocks, cosmos, and roses are in full bloom. There are no hummingbirds around to enjoy the nectar, but the pollen-eaters are out there buzzing like mad. The chestnut-backed chickadees love the sunflowers. Even when there is plenty of food in the birdfeeder, the chickadees prefer it natural.

The summer garden is still producing string beans, zucchini, beets, carrots, onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. The fall crop is up and hardy, and we have starts that we hope to let over-winter. I planted the garlic and broccoli just the other day, and also quite madly four cherry tomatoes and five basil plants in pots, which I plan to coax warmly in our southern windows in the house over winter. I love having fresh basil and cherry tomatoes in March. Small obtainable goals are what life is all about.

I am spending an hour of my time Thursday calling fellow Democrats in Washington to remind them how important this midterm election is. I'm calling people who tend to sit out the midterms. Calling them is just a little something, like planting a seed, in hopes of achieving an obtainable goal-- Congress in the hands of Democrats come November 7th. I'm sure people will hang up on me, but maybe one seed will take, and it will have been worth it.

At dinner Wednesday night, Roger and I rehearsed a phone call. I hadn't been trained (that happens at 11:00 am Thursday morning) by the time I concocted this post, so here's what we came up with:

"Hello, this is Robin calling on behalf of I'm calling to ask if you plan to vote for Democratic candidates in the midterms. So, what are you wearing right now? Are you naked? I am."

What do you think? Too Republican?
