Packed With Surprises

We were walking our favorite trail at the marsh the other day and noticed a man carrying a very interesting looking pack. From where I was standing, it looked like an unusual pack with a lovely picture of birds on it. That's when I noticed that the birds actually moved. So I photographed it.

He and his partner came up to the trail and told us that this is a "cat pack" that people often buy to bring their cats out on walks with them. So, they bought one to bring their birds out on their walks. They had tried taking the birds out one at a time on a leash, but preferred this so the birds could be together.
He told us that all animals like to have an opportunity to be outside and have a look around. They really enjoy the view. We told him that we really enjoyed this view as well.

I think those birds are going to learn how to talk, and they're new song will be, "Take us to the marsh! Take us to the marsh!"

We do get to see the most interesting and surprising things sometimes.

  1. Don't let Libby see this! She'll want to have one and take our birds for walks.

  4. That's pretty cool. I like their attitude. But I can't imagine the amount of squawking that must go on in their house.

    1. Patti-- I thought those birds were pretty lucky to have a chance to see the world outside their cages.

  6. That's a surprise but it's certainly got some reality to it.

    1. Red-- It really was a surprise. The last thing we ever expected to see were these three birds in a clear pack.

  7. That is wild! I can see that, barely, but a bird on a leash?

    1. Mark-- I was trying to picture what kind of device he used to keep a bird tethered on a walk.

  9. Seriously? This is the strangest thing. I suppose the birds are ok with it.

    1. Sabine-- I had the same reaction. Then I remembered that these birds are probably in cages all day. This is quite an outing for them. Weird and interesting.

  11. My friends in Longmont have one of these for their cat! I'd never seen such a thing. I'm wondering if Lucy would like it?! I don't take her on super long walks because she gets tired and I have to carry her. Maybe this is the solution?

    1. Tara-- I love the idea of taking Lucy on longer walks. I'm not sure this pack would be big enough for her. Have you looked at Chihuahua Sling Carriers? I googled it and found some interesting things. I think she'd love it!

  12. Wow! Something new under the sun.

    Reminded me of this:

    Maybe you saw that film?

I can see how parrots would be open to riding in a backpack, given how sociable and intelligent they are. They look calm and collected and loved.

    1. am-- Oh wow, I had forgotten about those parrots of Telegraph Hill. Thank you for reminding me. The birds in this pack were incredibly calm. They looked at me, I looked at them. It was a shared moment of love!

  13. One can only hope that the man carrying the birds never meets anyone carrying cats. I met a man who was carrying a large parrot perched on his shoulder once. And yes, he did have a large beard and an earring - no wooden leg though! On another occasion I carried a teddybear up a mountain (long story!).

    1. John-- I hadn't even thought of that. It would be quite a raucous encounter. You remind me that we've seen people walking with birds on their shoulders here as well. But we've never seen anyone carrying a teddybear!

  14. I have become quite used to seeing people with their dogs in carriers and even doggie carriages, but this was quite the sight! I wonder if you will see the birds and their owner on future walks in the marsh.

  15. I'm having trouble getting past the idea of trying to have a leash on the birds. I wonder if they were really serious about that. I can imagine your surprise. Definitely not something I've ever seen before.

    1. NCmountainwoman-- I wondered the same thing about the leash. Maybe he meant some other kind of tether?

    2. They make harnesses for birds!
In the past some people used leg tethers but that isn't such a great idea.

    3. MyamuhNative-- Ah, harnesses for birds. I may google that to see what it is. Thank you for stopping by.

    4. MyamuhNative-- I just took a look at harnesses with birds. Makes me think that's probably what this guy was talking about when he said "leash." Very cool.
