A Season of Change

I photographed this poppy flower a month ago.

They bloom wild in our yard and we let them because we love them.

Now most of them look like this.

Their seed pods have an interesting beauty about them as well. We're going to help scatter their seeds.

So in this season of change, we decided to have our house painted. We bought the house six years ago. It was painted a color we never liked. So now it's going to be a color we do like. The trim is going to be a deep dark red. It's going to look very much like the first house we bought together in Santa Cruz 1995. When I look out the window and see one wall painted already, I'm transported back in time.

It's a wonderful way to remember the past, bike riding everyday up to the university to work... being young... planning for the future that we're living now. Painting the house the color of our dreams again.

PS-- Hey, I got the photo to finally upload in the header. It's not perfect, but it is what it is.

  1. Poppies are doing rather well in one of my neighbours' gardens so I expect I might have some soon. Funny how something like a colour can send us cartwheeling back to earlier days.

    1. John-- We love when our poppies bloom. I hope you'll post photos of the poppies there. It surprised me how much the new house color sent me back in time.

  2. Deciding which color to paint a house is a big decision. I look forward to seeing how it turns out. Your header looks pretty, btw.

    1. Ally Bean-- We thought about the color for quite a while. We're hoping it will look as good as our imagination. Glad you like the header. Thank you!

  3. What a great header, so glad you got it to load! I agree about seeing certain colors bringing up memories, almost as much as favorite songs. The poppies are so sweet...and of course I don't have ground upon which to grow any. Maybe I'll try in a pot next year.

  4. I gather the new color is the cream? when we got our house painted I bought, in the end, about 15 paint color samples. the side wall of the garage got painted over and over until I settled on the combination we used. my poppies are only a memory now.

    1. ellen-- The paint swatch said "Lion Yellow." It has a tiny hint of yellow, but is really a lovely soft cream. We didn't get any color samples, just looked at the crazy array of colors, pointed at this one and said, "That's it!" Soon our poppies will only be a memory.

  5. Love you header with the great reflections. Admire your patience to have waited 6 years in a house you hated the color. Can't wait to see it finished. Maybe it will make you want to break out the bike again.

    1. Patti-- So glad you like the header. Thank you for that. Now that you mention it, I almost can't believe we waited six years to get rid of that color. We still have our bikes and haven't ridden them in quite a while. We keep saying we will... but haven't yet.

  8. Do you have a photo of that house that you both recall with such love. I think so many of us a contemplating the feeling of home post lock downs. What provokes the feeling of home, besides being with beloveds? Our memories inform the question. The paint job is going to be beautiful.

    1. 37paddington-- I was thinking about going through some of our old photos to find one and post it. I remember when we bought that house it was painted green, and when we painted it our neighbors came out and thanked us!

  10. Better be careful with publicizing those poppies. Your neighbors may start asking how your opium crop is doing! 😁

  12. I'm glad you're painting your house a color you like more! It's important to feel at home and appreciate your surroundings. You're so lucky to have those wild poppies. We plant our poppies every year, though sometimes they re-seed on their own.

    1. Steve-- We're so happy about the house being painted. We've been talking about it since we bought it in 2015! The poppies re-seeded over in the derelict neighbor's front yard. What a joy it is to see them there among the overgrown weeds.
